In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind by Eric R. Kandel
If you look at the Amazon page for In Search of Memory you’ll find that three out of four people have left it a five star review. That’s well above normal standards, and probably puts this book near the top 10% for all of the publications that Amazon stocks. One of the reasons that In Search of Memory is so popular is the way Eric Kandel expertly blends his own personal story, with his lifetime of research on the brain.
Balancing these two can be tricky, but Kandel does it well. Should you read it, you’ll get to learn about everything from his early experiences in Nazi occupied Vienna, to his work with Alzheimer patients, and his work with human memory. It’s a fascinating read, and since the book covers a variety of topics, you’ll end up learning more than you had ever planned to.
